SMS terms and conditions

These terms govern text messages sent and received in connection with research studies operated by the Child Mind Institute MATTER Lab. They supplement our organization-wide terms of use.

Program description

An automated interviewer conducts a standardized questionnaire by text message. Messages consist of questionnaire items and replies to what you send. No marketing or promotional messages are ever sent from this number.

The current program is a pilot test of that messaging system, run in preparation for a research study that has not yet begun and for which Child Mind Institute will apply for Institutional Review Board review.

Each participant is given a short written persona describing a fictional parent and child, and answers the questionnaire in character. No participant is asked about their own child or their own mental health.

How you opt in

The number +1 (507) 431-7807 is published publicly on our pilot information page and on our opt-in page. Anyone can see it without agreeing to anything first.

You opt in on the opt-in page, by entering your mobile number and ticking a box agreeing to receive text messages from the Child Mind Institute MATTER Lab at that number. The box is not ticked for you, and nothing is sent unless you tick it. We then send one confirmation message, and the conversation itself begins when you text us. We never message a number that has not opted in, and we do not buy, rent, or import phone number lists.

Message frequency

Expected length is 30 to 60 minutes, typically 100 to 200 messages in a single session.

Cost

Message and data rates may apply. We do not charge for participation.

Opting out and getting help

Reply STOP at any time to end the conversation and receive no further messages. Reply HELP for assistance, or email lindsay.alexander [at] childmind.org. Opting out does not affect your standing in the study or your compensation for work already completed.

Carriers and delivery

Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Supported carriers vary and delivery is not guaranteed on all networks.

Consent

Consent to receive text messages is not a condition of any purchase and is not required to participate in any other Child Mind Institute activity. Participation is voluntary and may be withdrawn at any time.
